What is a Fancy/VIP Number?

A Fancy Number (or VIP Number) is a highly desirable vehicle registration number, such as 0001, 9999, or repeating digits like 1111. Due to high demand, the Ministry of Road Transport allocates these numbers through a transparent online bidding process called the e-Auction.

Instead of the RTO randomly generating a number for your newly purchased vehicle, you can hold off the final registration and bid for a specific number of your choice. Fancy number selection is one of many features available through the Vahan 4.0 vehicle registration portal — check our guide for the complete list of citizen services available digitally.

Price Categories & Base Fees

Fancy numbers are divided into different categories by the state RTO. The base price (the minimum bidding amount) varies based on the category's desirability. Below is an approximate structure used by many states (like Delhi and Maharashtra):

Category Number Examples Approx. Base Price (Reserve Price)
Super Elite (Category 1) 0001 ₹5,00,000
Elite (Category 2) 0002 to 0009 ₹3,00,000
Category 3 0010 to 0099, 0786, 1111, 7777, 9999 ₹2,00,000
Category 4 0100, 0111, 0300, 0555... ₹1,00,000
Others / Choice Numbers Any specific unreserved number (e.g. your birth date) ₹5,000 to ₹25,000

Check Number Availability

  • Visit the Parivahan Fancy Number portal.
  • Select your State and RTO Name.
  • The system will display a list of all currently available VIP numbers in the upcoming series.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What happens if I don't win the auction?
If someone outbids you and you do not win the number, the initial Reserve Base Price you paid upfront will be fully refunded to your bank account within a few weeks. The ₹1,000 registration fee, however, is non-refundable.
2. Is it mandatory to buy a new car to get a fancy number?
Generally, yes. Fancy numbers are mostly allotted to newly purchased vehicles that have not yet received a permanent RC. Changing the number of an already registered old vehicle is extremely difficult and prohibited in many states.
3. Can I transfer my fancy number to my next car?
Yes, many states allow "Number Retention". If you sell or scrap your car, you can pay a retention fee to the RTO to keep your VIP number and assign it to a new vehicle you purchase.
