When Do You Need a Duplicate RC?

A Registration Certificate (RC) is the most critical document proving your legal ownership of a vehicle. You are legally required to carry it (physically or digitally via mParivahan) while driving. You must apply for a duplicate RC immediately if your original RC is lost, stolen, or destroyed.

Reason for Duplicate RC Specific Document Required Next Step Action
Lost or Misplaced Police NCR (Non-Cognizable Report) File a missing report online via state police portal.
Stolen Formal Police FIR (First Information Report) Visit the local police station to file a theft FIR.
Torn or Mutilated The original damaged RC Surrender the torn RC physically at the RTO.
Completely Illegible The original faded RC Surrender the faded RC physically at the RTO.

Required Form 26

To apply for a duplicate RC, you will need Form 26 (Intimation of loss or destruction of RC). You must print this, fill it out, sign it, and upload it to the Parivahan portal during your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is a Police FIR mandatory for a duplicate RC?
Yes, if your RC is lost or stolen, an FIR or Police NCR (Non-Cognizable Report) is absolutely mandatory to prevent misuse of your lost document. If it is just torn or mutilated, an FIR is not required, but you must surrender the torn RC.
2. Can I drive my vehicle while the application is pending?
Yes. Keep a copy of your FIR, the online duplicate RC fee receipt, and your Form 26 application with you while driving. This serves as proof that your application is in process.
3. What is the role of the Financier NOC?
If your vehicle was purchased on a loan (hypothecated), the RTO requires a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your bank indicating they have no issue with the RTO issuing a duplicate RC.
4. How long does it take to get the new Smart Card RC?
It typically takes 15 to 30 working days from the date of physical document verification at the RTO. The new RC will be dispatched to your registered address via Speed Post.
