DL Validity & Grace Period
In India, the validity of a non-transport (private) Driving Licence depends heavily on your age at the time of renewal. The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 introduced stricter validity periods for older drivers to ensure road safety.
| Age of Applicant | Licence Validity Period | Medical Certificate (Form 1A) |
|---|---|---|
| Under 30 Years | Valid until the age of 40 | Not Required |
| 30 to 50 Years | Valid for 10 Years | Required (If over 40) |
| 50 to 55 Years | Valid until the age of 60 | Required |
| Above 55 Years | Valid for 5 Years | Required |
| Commercial/Transport DL | Valid for 5 Years (3 Years for Hazardous) | Always Required |
The Grace Period
You can apply for DL renewal up to 1 year before its expiry date. If your licence has already expired, you have a Grace Period of 30 days to renew it without any penalty. After 30 days, severe late penalties are applied.
Medical Certificate (Form 1A)
A physical medical examination is mandatory if you are renewing your licence after the age of 40, or if you hold a Commercial/Transport vehicle licence. You must get Form 1A signed and stamped by a registered medical practitioner (MBBS doctor).
Form 1A (Medical Certificate)
Required for drivers over 40 years of age or for commercial licences.
